Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 Ti review: AD104 GPU has to prove itself with 12 GB for more Dollars

For the first time, the GeForce 4070 Ti will be on sale for less than 1,000 dollars, and it will beat the more expensive GeForce 3090 Ti in terms of performance. In the test, GamingEon explains how fast the graphics card really is.

The 4070 Ti is available in stores as a custom design. As GamingEon readers report in the thread to this article, there are three representatives of the species, which are the Inno3D GeForce RTX 4070 Ti X3, Asus GeForce RTX 4070 Ti TUF and MSI alternatives. The RTX 4070 Ti is now referred to the GeForce RTX 4080 12GB

The GeForce RTX 4080 was announced in September of 2022, in addition to the other two. In terms of memory capacity, the two RTX 4080s differed from each other. Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 Ti in detail

The GeForce RTX 4070 Ti is the third desktop graphics card of the generation based on the third ADA Lovelace GPU. The GeForce RTX 4090 uses the large AD102 chip, the GeForce RTX 4080 already uses the significantly smaller AD103 and the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti uses the even smaller AD104, which, with 295 mm² and 35.8 billion transistors, is not even half as large and complex as the flagship GPU. The same GPU is used in the notebook in the GeForce RTX 4080 laptop GPU.

In terms of features, there are no relevant differences between AD102, AD103 and AD104; primarily, the number of execution units is smaller. More details about the technology can be found in a separate article.

The full version of the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti comes with 7,680 units and 60 active streaming multiprocessors. Nvidia has only partially used AD103 and AD101 so far. The AD104 video unit can’t draw on its full potential. Even though the full two encoders are available, only one of the four available decoders is active.

The average boost for the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti is 2,610 MHz. It is possible to raise the power consumption above the 300 watt limit for any custom design. The new 16 pin power plug is expected to be installed on all partner cards. Each model comes with an accessory that allows operation with two 8 pin power plugs, which allows 300 watt of power via this connection. Within the norm, a power limit of 366 watt would be possible with a theoretical maximum of 66 watt via the PCIe slot. The boost clock rate of the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti TUF OC is 2,730 MHz, which is 120 MHz higher than the official clock rate for modern graphics cards. The TGP is based on the specifications of the company that makes it. It is possible to raise the maximum value to 314 watt.

The cooler of the graphics card has a length of 30.0 cm and a height of 13.5 cm. The weight shows that Gigabyte has not saved much on the cooling material, which is comparable to the competing model. The GeForce RTX 4070 Ti Eagle OC uses three fans with a diameter of 86mm, which use both many and closely spacing fan blades. The fans were shut down for a silent operation. The start speed is 1,100 revolutions per minute. The graphics card has a quiet BIOS which influences fan control. There is a factory condition.

The boost clock for the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti Eagle OC is 2.625 MHz, which is 15 MHz above the specifications. The normal TDP is 285 watt, but in this case it can be increased to 340 watt. There is a new 16 pin power plug installed on the Eagle OC.

Test system and test methodology

The editorial team rebuilt the test course because of the different demands of the new graphics cards from the two companies, and because they were specifically designed for the new generation. The resolutions used and graphics details used are reflected in the participating graphics cards. The latest drivers and games are used in the recreated benchmarks. With all the changes, the course is perfect for testing fast graphics cards, but the current generation is more and sometimes less overwhelmed. That’s intentional. At a later date, the normal graphics card test course will also be updated.

Over the course of the past three days, GamingEon has extensively tested the 4070 Ti. The following test system and methodology were used in a new test trail geared towards the next generation graphics card. The test system continues to use the Intel Core i9 12900K, which is the same processor as the one used in the ROG Maximus Z690 Apex. There is 32 gigabytes of memory available for the computer. Windows 11 and all the available updates are installed on an NVMe SSD. Resizable BAR can be enabled on all graphics cards. The 1200 watt power supply from the ROG THOR Platinum II comes with a 12VHPWR plug that can deliver 600 watt.

The editorial team uses a Fractal Design Torrent, which focuses on maximum airflow and is necessary for graphics cards with more than 350 watt, as they already worked out in July 2022. Anyone interested in a new graphics card is recommended to read this article. It won’t be easy to make a graphics card with 450 W. The housing uses a factory installed fan kit, but the speeds have been reduced. Detailed information about the test system can be found in the following table.

The Adrenalin 22.9.1 was used as a driver on all of the cards. The larger GeForce 3000 models were tested and found to provide more performance in the overhead of the system. The drivers for the GeForce The 22.40.00.57 driver was used for the Radeon RX 7900 XTX.

Full HD is no longer a challenge for one of the new graphics cards, which is why the resolution is not included in the benchmarks. The change only applies to the special course, which has been adjusted for RDNA 3. The return will be 1,920 1,080. The smallest resolution is WQHD and the new graphics cards are only 1,920 1,080. In order to use them to the maximum possible capacity, testing is carried out in Ultra HD for the first time, in 5,120 2,880. ray tracing is added in 2,560 1,440 and 3,840 2,160. For WQHD and Ultra HD, the details are set to the maximum, but partially reduced. The test course has adapted the game selection to include titles such as Spider Man Remastered. The graphics details have been improved so that they are always at the maximum up to and including Ultra HD, which was not the case in every title before. Due to the high requirements, the general test course takes slower graphics cards into account, but the new course will have more ray tracing performance than the previous ones, as both RDNA 3 and Ada Lovelace will have significantly more ray tracing performance than their predecessors. There is no maximum detail in every title. The graphics settings have been summarized by the editorial team.

It’s important that the FSR 2.x and the DLSS 2.x are included. The latest upsampling techniques from the two companies play a bigger part in the article. When using ray tracing, FSR 2.x is a must and is an important part of modern games. Compared to the first attempts at upsampling, the quality of the native resolution is often achieved and sometimes even exceeded, and there is a separate series of measurements which compares the quality of the graphics cards with each other. The render resolution of 2,560 1,440 is used for both cases.
